President's Message

Welcome back Slopers and friends to the 2016-17 ski and non ski year.  We are proud to say that as Florida’s first African American ski club, our goal of introducing skiing to our community as well as promoting alternatives to everyday sports has been met and continues to reach new heights.

Over the years, the Sunshine Slopers have introduced hundreds of South Floridians to the winter sports; traveled thousands of miles to all four corners of the world to such exciting venues as China, Italy, Africa and Europe. We’ve gotten a taste of “ski fever” and there’s no stopping us now!

This ski season, our trips began with the Early Warm up to Park City, Utah in December 3-10, 2016. Other planned trips will feature, the NBS Summit in Keystone, Co. and our annual international venture with the Florida Ski Council trip to Japan, 2017. For non-skiers and those who like to travel, we have social happy hours, special events such as plays and concerts, water sports, holiday parties, bowling, picnics and our annual club retreat.

Trips and outings new this year is the Florida Classic Football game in Orlando, Fla. Nov. 19, 2017, the  NBA Weekend All star game in New Orleans Feb. 17-19, 2017 and the Kentucky Derby May 5-7, 2017 in Louisville, Ky. three events your don't want to miss.

We also don't want to forget our Sunshine Slopers Youth Club. We develop, train and instill the importance of cultural awareness in our African-American Youth. Our youth train year-round to bring home medals during competitions—much to the amazement of those who live in cooler climates! We thank our parents for their continued support and look forward to welcoming new members to our Youth Club.

One thing we will still have in common for over 25 years  that we are still a family, strong in numbers, desires and high level accomplishment—all tied to the love of skiing.

Thank you for celebrating 2016-17 ski year with us.

Samuel C. Jackson, President Sunshine Slopers Ski Club
